What this means
Income is not handed out at random. A large part of what someone earns traces back to choices they made about learning: what they studied, what training they completed, what skills they practiced until they were good at them.
The link runs through productivity. Education and training are valuable to an employer because they make a worker able to produce more, produce it faster, or produce something other workers cannot produce at all. A person who can wire a building safely, read a blood test, write code that works, or run a commercial kitchen is bringing something specific that took time to build.
A credential is proof you completed one of those learning paths. Credentials come in many shapes: a high school diploma, an industry certificate, a state license, an apprenticeship completion, an associate degree, a bachelor's degree, a trade school certificate. Different jobs demand different ones, and a credential that is required for one job can be irrelevant to another. An electrician's license is essential for electrical work and useless for a nursing job, and the reverse is equally true.
That is why there is no single best path. The useful question is never "which path is the most impressive?" It is "which path builds the skills the work I want actually requires?" Some careers are closed without a specific degree. Some are entered through apprenticeship, where you earn money while training. Some are entered by learning on the job. What these paths share is that they build marketable skills.
The standard also states the harder half of this plainly. People with fewer skills and less education face fewer employment options. That is the real mechanism behind lower earnings potential. It is not that hard work stops counting. It is that a smaller set of doors is open, and when fewer employers can use what you offer, you have less choice and less bargaining power over pay.
Why it matters
You are close to the age where these choices start becoming real: which classes to take, whether to pursue a certification, whether to take a summer job that teaches something. None of these decisions is final, and people change direction throughout their lives. But they compound, because each skill you build makes the next one easier to reach.
Understanding the mechanism also protects you from bad advice in both directions. Someone will tell you a degree is the only route to a decent living. Someone else will tell you degrees are a waste. Both are giving you a slogan instead of an analysis. The question that actually helps is which skills a given path produces and which employers are looking for those skills.
Real-world example
Pick any career you find interesting and read five real job postings for it. Almost every posting states its requirements directly: a license, a certificate, a degree in a named field, a number of years of experience, or sometimes nothing beyond a willingness to train. Compare a posting for a hospital lab technician, a licensed electrician, a paralegal, and a delivery driver, and you will see four different answers about what learning the job demands. The postings are the most honest source available, because employers are describing what they will actually pay for.

You are going to research paths into a career instead of guessing about them.
- Pick one career you are genuinely curious about. It does not have to be one you plan on.
- Find five real job postings for that career using a job site or your state's labor department site. Save the links.
- From the postings, build a requirements table. For each posting record: required education or credential, required licenses or certificates, required years of experience, and the specific skills named. Note where the postings disagree with each other, because they often will.
- Extract the skills list. Separate it into two columns: skills specific to this field, and skills that would transfer to many jobs, such as writing clearly, working on a team, or handling scheduling software.
- Map at least three different routes a person could take into this career. Depending on the field, routes might include a four-year degree, a two-year degree, a trade or technical program, an apprenticeship, a certification earned while working, or starting in an entry-level role and training up. For each route, write down roughly how long it takes, what it costs, whether you earn money during it, and which skills from step 4 it builds.
- Look up real numbers rather than assuming them. Use the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook to find current pay and job outlook for this career, and use a specific school or program's published page for the cost and length of a route. Write down your sources.
- Answer the trade-off question in writing: what does each route cost in time and money, and what does each one give up? An apprenticeship that pays you while you train gives up something a degree program provides, and a degree program gives up years of earnings. Name both sides for each route.
- Now run the reverse case. Look at the same five postings and identify what happens to someone who has none of the listed credentials or skills. How many of the five could they apply for? Write one paragraph on how a narrower set of options affects a person's bargaining power over pay.
- Present your findings. Your presentation must include at least two viable routes and must not declare one universally best. State clearly what each route suits and who it might not suit.

Step 9's constraint is the one to hold firm on, and students will resist it, because they arrive with a ranking already installed from home or from social media, in one direction or the other. Requiring two viable routes and forbidding a universal winner forces the actual economic reasoning, which is that routes differ in cost, time, forgone earnings, and which doors they open, and that the right answer depends on the person and the field. Step 6 exists because students will otherwise invent salary figures that are off by large multiples; require a cited source and a date for every number. Step 8 is the part most likely to be rushed, and it is where the standard's second sentence lives. The point is not that people without credentials are less deserving. It is structural: when only one of five employers can use what you offer, you take what that employer offers. Push students to state it in terms of options and bargaining power rather than in terms of effort or worth. Two smaller misconceptions to watch for: students often assume any credential raises pay, when only a relevant one does, and they frequently miss that time spent training is itself a cost because of the earnings given up. Step 3's instruction to note disagreements between postings matters too, since discovering that three postings for the same job title list different requirements teaches that hiring is messier than a single rule. A student has it when they can describe two genuinely different routes into the same career, state the trade-offs of each in time and money, and explain the options-and-bargaining-power link without moralizing about it.
