What this means
Two things are true about technology and jobs, and people usually insist on only one of them.
The first is job creation. New technologies create entire occupations that did not previously exist. Somebody has to design the systems, build them, install them, repair them, and manage the people using them. New industries also create jobs that have nothing to do with the technology itself: the delivery driver, the warehouse supervisor, the customer support representative.
The second is job displacement. When a task can be handled by a machine or by software, the workers who used to perform that task may no longer be needed for it. Their employer is not being cruel; the job in its old form has changed or disappeared.
Notice that displacement usually happens to tasks, not to whole people or whole professions at once. Most jobs are bundles of many tasks. When technology takes over some of them, the job often changes shape rather than vanishing. A bank teller today spends less time counting cash and more time helping customers with complicated problems, because machines took the counting task.
The hard part is that these two effects rarely land on the same person. The jobs created may require different skills, appear in a different city, or arrive years after the jobs lost. The economy as a whole can gain while specific workers and specific towns clearly lose. Any honest account of technology and employment has to hold both of those facts at once.
Why it matters
You will spend decades in a labor market that keeps changing. Knowing that technology creates and displaces at the same time is more useful than betting on either story alone, because it tells you what to actually do: pay attention to which tasks in a field are becoming automatable, and build skills that pair well with the new tools rather than competing head-on with them.
It also matters for how you read the news. Headlines swing between "technology will eliminate work" and "technology creates more jobs than it destroys." Both are simplifications of a messier reality, and you can check the messier reality yourself with public data.
Real-world example
Gig economy platforms show both effects in one place. The technology, which is smartphones plus location data plus instant payment, made it possible for someone to accept a delivery or a ride with no interview, no schedule, and no employer in the traditional sense. That created earning opportunities for people who needed flexible hours or could not find conventional work. It also disrupted traditional labor markets, because platform workers are usually classified as independent contractors rather than employees, which changes who pays for their equipment, their downtime, and their benefits. Cities and courts continue to argue over that classification precisely because the technology created a kind of work the older rules were not built to handle.
Try it
- Open the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook online. It is free and public. Find the section that lists occupations projected to grow the fastest and the section that lists occupations projected to decline.
- Record the actual numbers you find. Do not use numbers from memory or from this lesson. Copy the projected percent change for each occupation you choose, and note the years the projection covers.
- Choose three growing occupations and three declining ones. Prioritize occupations where you suspect technology is part of the story.
- For each of your six occupations, read the handbook's own explanation of why employment is expected to change. The handbook usually states its reasoning directly. Write down whether technology is named as a cause, and if so, how.
- Build a two-column chart. On one side, list occupations where technology appears to be adding jobs. On the other, list occupations where technology appears to be removing them. Some occupations may belong in both columns, and if you find one, that is a genuinely interesting finding worth flagging.
- Look for the task level. For at least one declining occupation, identify which specific tasks a machine or program can now do. Then ask what tasks in that job a machine still cannot do well.
- Investigate gig platforms separately. List the technologies that made them possible, then write two short paragraphs: one on the job opportunities they created, one on how they disrupted traditional employment. Give each paragraph equal effort.
- Write a closing position: if you were advising a friend entering the workforce, what would you tell them about technology and jobs? Your answer must account for both columns of your chart.
Teacher note
Step 2 is non-negotiable and worth policing, because the whole value of this activity is that the numbers are real and current rather than recalled or invented; projections are revised regularly, so a figure a student half-remembers is likely wrong. If internet access is limited, print a few handbook pages in advance rather than substituting made-up data. Step 6 is the conceptual core: middle school students think in whole jobs, and the shift to thinking in tasks is what makes the rest of this topic tractable. Expect the discussion to polarize; some students arrive convinced automation is coming for everything, others that it always works out fine, and both camps will cherry-pick from the handbook. Requiring both columns in step 5 and both paragraphs in step 7 is what keeps the analysis honest. Watch for the subtle error of concluding that because total employment has historically grown, no individual is harmed by displacement; aggregate gains and individual losses coexist, and a student who can say that clearly has understood the benchmark. A student has it when they cite a specific handbook occupation with a real number and explain the technological reason behind its direction.
